Boise Hawks News Release
BOISE, Idaho - Ian Dickson pitched six no-hit innings, helping the Boise Hawks open the second half of the Northwest League season with a 2-1 victory over the Yakima Bears at Memorial Stadium.
The right-hander, from Northport, N.Y., retired the first 15 men in order - before Ronnie Freeman reached on an error to lead off the sixth. A second error in the innnig would put two Yakima runners on, but Dickson got Danny Poma to ground out and struck out Kevin Medrano to get out of the jam. He finished the night with four strikeouts in picking up his second win.
Boise got on the board in the third inning, as Stephen Bruno walked with two outs, scoring on a Jeimer Candelario drive off the right field wall. Candelario would score on a throwing error by Medrano on a Willson Contreras grounder to extend the lead to 2-0.
Yakima would break up the no-hitter in the eighth, as reliever Hunter Ackerman allowed back-to-back singles by Freeman and Mike Lang. After a sacrifice bunt, Danny Poma drove in Freeman with a ground out, but Ackerman got Medrano to hit a roller to second to end the frame. The lefty would strikeout Wagner Mateo to start the ninth, then hand the ball over to Mike Hamann, who got the final two outs for his first professional save.
Candelario and Dan Vogelbach, making his Boise debut, each went 2-for-4 in the victory. Daniel Wants took the loss for Yakima, going six innings, allowing just one earned run on six hits, striking out two.
Game 2 of the series is tomorrow night, with Felix Pena getting the start for the Hawks, opposite lefty Cody Wheeler, at 7:15 p.m.
