Hawks Whitewash Cedar Rapids

Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Cal Petersen made 21 saves, and the Waterloo Black Hawks claimed their second shutout in less than a week, winning 3-0 at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena against the RoughRiders Friday.

Petersen was busiest in the third when he made nine stops. The Hawks limited the RoughRiders to four shots in the first period and eight in the second.

The lone goal during the opening 20 minutes came at 8:37 when Austin Vieth capitalized opportunistically on a rebound. Blake Winiecki's shot off the left wing boards set up Vieth in the slot when the initial chance caromed off of goaltender Danny Tirone.

In the second, the RoughRiders had trouble controlling the puck during their first power play, and one turnover too many led to a shorthanded goal. Tyler Sheehy swiped the puck from Scott Moldenhauer, stepped to the front of the net, and backhanded a shot inside the post at 5:55.

The Hawks added a final tally in the third during a power play. Zach Sanford stepped across the left wing circle and lifted the puck to the twine at 11:15. Waterloo finished the night 1-for-3 on the power play after scoring twice during three opportunities in Thursday's 3-2 win against the RoughRiders.

The Hawks had recorded their first shutout of the season by the same score six days earlier, last Saturday against the Lincoln Stars. Mathias Israelsson made 25 saves in that matchup.

Waterloo's busy weekend concludes Saturday versus the Sioux City Musketeers. The game at Young Arena will feature the third annual Dachshund Derby, presented by Paw Prints Pet Salon in Hudson and NutriSource Pet Foods. Tickets for the 7:05 contest are available online from waterlooblackhawks.com or by calling (319) 291-7680.
