Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD - Former Dubuque goaltender Arthur Brey was the story in his first game against his former team, stopping all 38 shots he saw to help lead the Sioux Falls Stampede to a 3-0 win over the Fighting Saints on Friday night at the Sioux Falls Arena. Brey, who led Dubuque to a Clark Cup title in 2012-2013, picked up his fifth win for the Stampede and was helped by three first period goals from his teammates.
The Stampede struck three times in the game's opening frame despite being outshot 11-9. Only 3:29 into the game, Dakota Joshua chipped a shot from the low slot over Dubuque goaltender Christian Frey's blocker to make it 1-0. After the Saints bobbled the puck behind the goal, Keith Burchett collected the loose puck and sent it to the netfront for Joshua who scored his third of the season.
The Stampede would score twice more before the period ended as Jack Stander notched his first USHL goal at the 15:03 mark. Stander got the puck at the left point, walked around Dubuque's Alexx Privitera, and roofed a shot top corner to make it 2-0. Zeb Knutson and C.J. Franklin assisted on the goal. Knutson set up the Stampede's third goal of the period four minutes later. Conner Valesano skated out of the penalty box and slipped behind the Dubuque defense. Knutson hit him with a bank pass off the boards and the Sioux Falls forward streaked in alone on Frey, making a great move, and tucking the puck past the goaltender's right pad to make it 3-0 at the 19:06 mark.
Brey, released by Dubuque in September, was solid in goal for the Stampede. Dubuque's early opportunities came from the perimeter, but Brey stopped all 26 shots he faced through the game's first two periods. His biggest save came in the first period on a point blank wrist shot from Shane Kavanagh. Brey added 12 more saves in the third period for his first shutout of the season. He was the game's first star.
The Fighting Saints were shutout for the first time since November 30, 2012 when they were beaten 3-0 at Waterloo. Dubuque fell to 13-5-1 on the season and 4-5-1 on the road.
The Fighting Saints were 0-for-4 on the powerplay Friday night in Sioux Falls while the Stampede did not get a powerplay in the game. Dubuque outshot Sioux Falls 38-29 on the evening.
The Fighting Saints travel to Fargo for a rematch of the 2013 Clark Cup Final on Saturday night. Dubuque returns home for a pair of games next weekend, hosting Team USA U-17 for Ron Burgundy Night on Friday, and Waterloo on Saturday for Santa Claus presents: Teddy Bear Toss presented by Queen B Radio.
