Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

The Waterloo Black Hawks opened a late-season weekend series against the Sioux Falls Stampede with a 5-3 win at Young Arena Friday.

Waterloo seized a 2-0 lead in the first period. It was completely erased, but the Hawks still were ahead at the intermission. At 8:10, Bobby Trivigno leaned into a shot from the right circle and beat Mikhail Berdin to the stick side during a power play. Just 50 seconds later, Garrett Wait capitalized with a backhander on the rebound of a Ben Finkelstein shot.

Only 19 more seconds ticked off the clock before Kevin Conley came speeding up right wing and lifted a shot to the opposite corner of the net for the Stampede's first tally. Waterloo killed off a four minute Sioux Falls power play, but the Stampede still tied it at 15:32; Griffin Lunn followed his dump in and lifted a shot under the crossbar.

However, the Hawks reassumed the lead with 21 seconds to go before intermission. Finkelstein's shot-pass led to a pointblank try for Jack Drury. The center's attempt was denied, but he scored on his second try.

Evan Dougherty struck at 5:42 of the second to give Waterloo a new multigoal lead. Stealing a breakout pass when he came to the ice on a change, Dougherty stepped in for a one-on-one look against Berdin and flipped a shot inside the post at the goalie's left. Sioux Falls got that goal back at 9:10 when the Hawks had trouble clearing; Artem Ivanyuzhenkov moved to the slot to score on a low shot.

The teams grappled through the third with no scoring until less than 30 seconds remained. In a six-on-five situation with an extra Sioux Falls attacker on the ice, Trivigno got the puck to the center red line to score into an open net.

The third period was the only frame in which the Stampede outshot Waterloo. Moe stopped all 12 shots in the final 20 minutes and made 28 total saves for the win.

Saturday the teams meet for an instant rematch at 7:05 p.m. It's Field of Dreams Night; fans in attendance will have the opportunity to meet Ghost Players from the Field of Dreams Movie Site in Dyersville and pose for pictures.
