Hawks Slowed by Hot Rods in Series-Opener

SOUTH BEND - The South Bend Silver Hawks (15-11) opened a seven-game homestand with a 9-3 loss Wednesday against the Bowling Green Hot Rods (15-11) in game one of a three-game series. The Hawks and Hot Rods are now tied for second place in the Eastern Division.

Right-hander Tyler Green (0-2) got the loss in relief, allowing eight runs - five earned - on six hits over four innings. Jake Floethe (3-1) snagged the win for the Hot Rods surrendering three earned runs on seven hits over 5.2 innings. J.R. Bradley started for South Bend and got a no decision, allowing just one earned run on five hits over five innings.

The Silver Hawks scored two runs in the third inning and took an early 2-0 lead. Ender Inciarte started the inning with a double and came in on Tom Belza's sacrifice fly. Gerson Montilla followed that with a double and scored on Matt Helm's RBI basehit up the middle. Montilla and Helm each finished 2-for-4 for South Bend. Bobby Stone added an RBI single in the sixth inning and was also 2-for-4.

The Hot Rods took the lead with a three-run sixth inning that included doubles from Jeff Malm, Cameron Seitzer and Tyler Motter. Hot Rods scored at least one run in four of their final five offensive innings and outscored the Hawks 9-1 to close out the game.

Matt Rice got Bowling Green on the board with a solo home run in the fifth inning off Bradley. Ryan Brett hit a solo home run off Green in the ninth inning. The Silver Hawks have now lost 3-of-4 against Bowling Green this season. The Hot Rods outhit the Hawks 11-9.

Jason McEachern tossed 2.1 scoreless innings out of the Hot Rods bullpen. Austin Hubbard got the final three outs with a perfect ninth inning.

The Hawks and Hot Rods will play game two of the three-game set tomorrow at Coveleski Stadium. Right- hander Archie Bradley (3-1, 2.08) gets the start for South Bend and he will be opposed by left-hander Felipe Rivero (2-1, 0.67). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m EST.
