Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, MI - After starting the season 0-3 at the hands of their in-state rivals, the Great Lakes Loons enacted revenge, with first baseman Joe Winker and starting pitcher Jarret Martin leading the way Wednesday night at Dow Diamond, to win the series opener over the Lansing Lugnuts, 7-1.
In the first inning, three Loons hits and two Lansing errors put Great Lakes ahead 3-0. Leadoff hitter and Loons second baseman Jesus Arredondo started the inning with a single to left field. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on an error by Lansing pitcher Anthony DeSchlafani. Driving in the first run was Joe Winker with a single to right field, on the play James Baldwin scored from first after a throwing error by Andrew Burns. Scott Schebler added a third run with his ninth double of the season.
Meanwhile, Loons starting pitcher Jarret Martin commanded the game defensively, hurling seven scoreless innings to pick up his second win of the season. The outing trims his ERA to 2.91 (11 earned runs in 34.0 innings pitched) and increases his league-leading strikeout total to 37 after fanning five Lugnuts on the night.
"Martin gave us a great start," Winker said of his teammate. "We got him some run support early and he just settled in."
Martin said the early runs allowed him to play a little looser, holding Lansing to two hits. As the lefty carved up batters, Winker continued to run-up the scoreboard. In the third inning, the Florida-native hit an RBI-double to right field that brought in Arredondo to make it 4-0. Winker kept his offensive surge going in the seventh by driving a two-run home run out of the park, 385 feet.
The Loons added one final run later in the seventh via a double from Noel Cuevas. The team combined for 13 hits with five Loons having multi-hit outings. Arredondo and Winker each had three. Lansing starter DeSchlafani was charged with the loss.
The Loons will play game two of the Mitten Series on Thursday night at Dow Diamond. Making his first start for the Loons will be RHP Ryan O'Sullivan (1-2, 3.60) against the Lugnuts LHP David Rollins (2-0, 1.65). The night will be one of Chemical Bank's $1 Family Feast Nights, where fans can enjoy hot dogs, 16 oz. Coke products and ice cream sandwiches for just one dollar apiece.
The Great Lakes Loons are a sixth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and are in the middle of their 5th Anniversary Celebration, which kicked off in August 2011 and will continue throughout the 2012 season. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
