Captains Top Dragons 5-3 in First Game of Set

Dayton, Ohio-Leonardo Castillo belted a home run and drove in two runs to lead the Lake County Captains to a 5-3 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Field. A crowd of 8,144 saw the Dragons fall to 12-14 on the season in the first game of a three-game series.

Castillo, who entered the game batting just .146, led a 14-hit Lake County attack. Bryson Myles contributed three hits including a two-run double and Francisco Lindor also had three hits. Lindor was the Cleveland Indians first round draft pick in 2011 and is widely considered to be the Tribe's top minor league prospect.

Each team scored an unearned run in the first inning before the Dragons took a brief lead in the second. Juan Silva singled to start the inning, advanced to second on Sean Buckley's base hit, took third on Kyle Waldrop's fielder's choice, and scored on a sacrifice fly to deep right field off the bat of Junior Arias.

But Lake County responded with two runs in the third to take a 3-2 lead. In the fourth, the Captains got a home run from Castillo to left field, his first of the year, to make it 4-2.

Dayton's Ryan Wright hammered a long home run to left field in the fifth, his first of the season, to pull the Dragons to within one at 4-3. But Lake County responded with a single run in the sixth on Castillo's run-scoring single to again give the Captains a two-run lead and close out the scoring.

The Dragons best choice to score late in the game came in the eighth inning. With two outs and the bases empty, Silva walked and Buckley reached on an infield single. But Lake County reliever Rob Nixon struck out Dayton's Kyle Waldrop to end the threat. The Dragons were retired in order in the ninth.

Dragons starting pitcher Justice French worked the first five innings, allowing 10 hits and five runs (four earned) with one walk and five strikeouts. He suffered the loss and fell to 3-2 on the year.

The Dragons finished with nine hits. Wright and Buckley each had two. Silva reached base four times in four plate appearances with a single and three walks.

The Dragons host Lake County again Thursday at 7:05 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. Radhames Quezada (0-3, 2.88) will start for Dayton against Lake County's Elvis Araujo (0-4, 2.49). The game will be televised on WHIO Digital Channel 7.2 (Channels 23 and 372 on Time Warner Cable). Former Reds first baseman and Dragons manager Todd Benzinger will provide color commentary.
