Portland Winterhawks News Release
Portland, Ore. - Cross Hanas scored twice and helped set up two others as the Winterhawks raced past the Victoria Royals 5-2 on Wednesday night.
Taylor Gauthier stopped 26 of 28 shots in the team's bounce-back performance following Tuesday's defeat in Victoria.
For the second consecutive evening, the Hawks struck first in the contest as Robbie Fromm-Delorme continued his hot play with his 14th goal of the year, whacking home a rebound at the side of the net at 5:18. But after coughing up a quick response goal last night, the Hawks kept their foot on the gas in the first period, doubling their advantage with Clay Hanus' 14th of the year at 11:45 on the power play. Hanus played a give-and-go with James Stefan at the left circle before wiring a long-range wrister past Campbell Arnold.
Victoria came out firing to start period two with a goal just 10 seconds into the frame, but three unanswered Portland tallies in the next six minutes began to put the game out of reach. Hanas posted his first of the night at 3:51 when he corralled a deflected Marek Alscher shot at the right circle and chipped it home to make it 3-1. Two minutes later, Stefan forced a turnover and found Gabe Klassen streaking through the slot for a quick snap shot and a 4-1 lead, followed just 20 seconds after by Hanas' second of the evening on a deflection of Luca Cagnoni's shot from the blue line.
The Royals received something of a morale boost when Marcus Almquist notched his first WHL goal in the third period, but the Winterhawks' lead was insurmountable as they cruised to a 5-2 win.
Portland now travels to Kent to take on the Thunderbirds on Friday before returning home for Saturday night's tilt at the VMC against Vancouver.
