Hawks rally falls short in 7-6 loss at Spokane

August 22, 2008 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Boise Hawks News Release

Ryan Schlecht struck out Ryan Keedy with the tying run at second base in the top of the ninth inning, as a furious Boise Hawks rally fell a run short, as the Spokane Indians took Game 2 of the three game series by a score of 7-6, before 4,504 fans at Avista Stadium.

After the Indians took a 7-1 lead in the fifth inning, the Hawks rallied, getting a two-run double from Kyler Burke, a sacrifice fly by Michael Brenly, and an RBI groundout from Marwin Gonzalez in a four-run sixth to cut the deficit to 7-5. Gonzalez added an RBI single in the eighth to cut the margin to 7-6, and nearly tied it in the ninth, as Josh Vitters hit a double to left-center - just off the top of the wall, with two outs. However, Keedy could not catch up to a 1-2 fastball by Schlecht, who picked up his third save of the year.

Mike Bianucci went 3-for-4 with two RBI, including RBI singles in the three-run fourth and the three-run fifth innings as Spokane built their lead.

Vitters got the Hawks on the board with his fifth home run of the season in the opening frame, finishing the night 2-for-5. Burke, Keedy, and Ryan Flaherty each had two hits in the loss, as Boise dropped to seven games behind the front-running Indians, with just 13 games remaining in the season.

The rubber game of the three-game series is tomorrow night, with Aaron Shafer getting the starting nod for the Hawks.
