Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winter Hawks skated stride for stride with the Spokane Chiefs for much of the game Friday night at the Memorial Coliseum, but two late goals for Spokane broke open a close game and the Chiefs skate away with a 4-1 win over the Hawks.
The Winter Hawks were down one goal entering the third period, after Travis Ehrhardt buried a wrist shot for the bottom of the face-off circle late in the second period off assists from Chris Francis and Troy Rutkowski. It was Ehrhardt's eighth goal of the season and fourth of the year against Spokane.
Tyler Johnson scored a power play goal with just over three minutes remaining in the final period and Brady Calla added an empty-net goal to provide the late scoring for Spokane.
Justin McCrae scored the lone goal of the opening period for the Chiefs, finishing a two-on-one, and then Ondrej Roman scored on a short-handed breakaway late in the second period to give the Chiefs a two-goal lead.
In net, Kurtis Mucha stopped 27 of 30 shots for Portland while Dustin Tokarski handled 29 of 30 for Spokane.
On special teams, Spokane went 1 for 3 on the power play while Portland went 0 for 5.
Next up, the Hawks travel to Kent, WA, to take on the Seattle Thunderbirds on Saturday night at 7:05.
