Hawks' November Starts Inauspiciously
November 5, 2021 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Three first period goals by the Dubuque Fighting Saints left the Waterloo Black Hawks playing from behind all night in a Friday matchup which ended 5-1 at Young Arena.
The Hawks couldn't recover from a difficult start; the Saints were on the power play in the game's first minute and took the lead seconds after the advantage began. Samuel Sjolund sent in a low shot at 1:18 from the inside edge of the right circle. Less than two minutes later, Stephen Halliday made it 2-0, tipping a try by Connor Kurth. Then in the final minute before intermission, Kenny Connors connected with Max Montes in transition, and Montes banged in an attempt from the top of the crease.
The score remained unchanged in the second and Dubuque held their 3-0 lead until Tucker Shedd ended Philip Svedeback's shutout bid at 8:15 of the third. The Waterloo defenseman's first USHL goal was setup from behind the Saints' net by Mason McCormick; Svedeback stopped Shedd's first attempt from the left circle, but the rookie fired in his own rebound.
Hopes for a rally ran aground at 13:28 while the teams skated four-on-four. Jack Williams stopped a Halliday breakaway attempt, but help did not arrive in time to stop Kurth from lifting the rebound to the back of the net.
Waterloo lifted Williams to skate six-on-five beginning with three-and-a-half minutes to go, and the Saints capitalized on a goal credited to Halliday with 2:16 remaining, extending the lead to its largest margin.
Friday's game was the only time the Hawks play on home ice during a six-game span. The team is back on the road Saturday to meet the Sioux Falls Stampede for the first time this season.
