Boise Hawks News Release
YAKIMA, Wash. - Felix Pena won his fourth-straight decision and Gioskar Amaya had three hits, lifting the Boise Hawks to a key 7-4 victory over the Yakima Bears at County Stadium.
The win lifts the Hawks to 4-2 on the current 11-game road trip and extends their lead to five games over Yakima and six games over Spokane with just 10 games remaining. The magic number for Boise to clinch their first divisional title since 2006 is six.
Amaya led off the game by hitting the second pitch over the right field wall for his seventh homer of the season. The Hawks would add three more runs in the inning, taking advantage of a pair of Yakima errors to plate two, with Albert Almora blooping home an RBI single.
Yakima would cut the gap to 4-3, as Danny Poma scored on a wild pitch in the first, with the Bears adding two in the second, including an RBI double from Jesus Abreu. The Hawks would take advantage of charity in the fourth as with two outs and two on, Mateo threw away a throw to first on a Dan Vogelbach grounder, allowing two runs to score, pushing the lead to 6-3.
Pena was dominant in his five innings, limiting the Bears to an unearned run on four hits, striking out three. Eddie Orozco came in and got the final six outs for his team-leading sixth save.
The Hawks head to Canada tomorrow to open a five-game set with the West Division leading Vancouver Canadians. Justin Amlung meets Nick Purdy at 8:05 p.m. (MT) from Nat Bailey Stadium.
