March 25, 2013 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa-First-year Black Hawk forward Zach Stepan was among several Waterloo players recognized Sunday evening for their contributions to the organization in 2012/13 during the franchise's annual Awards Banquet at Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center.

The Black Hawks Booster Club bestowed its annual award on Stepan, based on his positive interaction with fans and corresponding strong play during games. The Ohio State recruit was also recognized with the Roth Jewelers Front Office Award for setting a solid, upstanding example for all members of the organization. Stepan's teammates voted him the club's Unsung Hero.

Among the other awards which the players confer upon their teammates each spring, Alec McCrea and John Wiitala shared recognition as the team's Most Improved Player. Jake Horton was chosen as Waterloo's Hardest Worker. In his first full USHL season, Justin Kloos was named the Hawks' Rookie of the Year; he currently leads the squad with 49 assists and is second in points at 75. Leading scorer Taylor Cammarata was recognized as co-MVP, along with third-year veteran Vince Hinostroza. Cammarata has a league-leading total of 78 points accumulated in 51 games. Over 39 appearances, Hinostroza has 56. Both are likely to finish their junior careers in the coming weeks among Waterloo's top-ten modern-era scorers.

By popular demand, Dane Cooper was presented with the Slumberland Furniture Fan's Choice Player of the Year Award. With one dollar equaling one vote, money generated from fans benefits charitable causes which the Black Hawks support throughout the year. Cooper is the fifth consecutive defenseman to be named the Slumberland Furniture Fan's Choice Player of the Year.

Active involvement in the Cedar Valley brought veteran players Eamon McAdam and Ryan Papa to the lectern to accept the Black Hawks' Community Service Award. The duo tied for the most hours spent helping with community projects.

Janet O'Connell's service to the team led to recognition with the Karen Wente Distinguished Service Award. O'Connell has helped the Hawks with jersey alterations, always answering the call even on short notice.

The Black Hawks have eight games remaining during the final three weeks of the season. Two of the four contests left on the home portion of the schedule will be played this weekend at Young Arena. Friday, Waterloo hosts the Tri-City Storm before a Saturday matchup against the Fargo Force. Tickets for both 7:05 games are available online from waterlooblackhawks.com or by calling (319) 291-7680.
