Youngstown Phantoms News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Youngstown Phantoms would like to congratulate former defenseman Andrej Sustr on signing a two-year entry level contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning Thursday. Sustr, who played with the Phantoms from 2009-10 and spent the past three years at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, is the first player in the franchise's United States Hockey League history to sign a NHL contract.
Sustr, a 6-foot-8, 225-pound blue liner, was one of the most sought after college free agents once UNO's season came to an end after an opening round loss to Minnesota State in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association tournament. The Plzen, Czech Republic, native also attended Tampa Bay's development camp as an undrafted invitee last summer.
"Andre is a big, mobile, right shot defenseman with very good skills. We feel he has great potential to develop into a good NHL player," Tampa Bay general manager Steve Yzerman said. "We're excited to have him join our organization."
Sustr, 22, played with the Phantoms during their inaugural USHL season, registering one goal, 18 assists and 19 points along with 95 penalty minutes in 50 games. His 18 assists are the third highest single season total for a defenseman in Youngstown franchise history. In addition, as a member of the Phantoms, Sustr was selected to represent the Czech Republic in the 2010 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.
Following his USHL career, Sustr spent three seasons at Nebraska-Omaha collecting 15-36-51 and a plus-24 rating over 111 career games. This season, the he recorded career highs in goals (9), assists (15) and points (25) to lead all Mavericks defensemen in scoring and earn a place on the All-WCHA First Team.
Sustr could make his NHL debut later this season.
