July 10, 2011 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Boise Hawks News Release
BOISE, Idaho - Four Boise pitchers combined to allow just four hits, while Paul Hoilman clubbed his fifth home run of the season, helping the Hawks to a 3-1 victory over the Everett Aquasox at Memorial Stadium.
Willengton Cruz logged his first win of the season, allowing just three hits in five innings of work, striking out five, while three relievers did not allow an Everett runner to reach scoring position.
Hoilman launched a two-run homer in the first to give Boise the early lead, but the Aquasox got within a run in the fourth on a Jabari Blash RBI double. Everett would have runners at second and third with one out, but Cruz fanned Nathan Melendres and Mike Dowd to get out of trouble.
The Hawks would add an insurance run in the fifth on a Kenny Socorro sacrifice fly - turning it over to their pen, as Joe Zeller tossed a scoreless sixth, Dustin Fitzgerald tossed two shutout frames, and Bryce Shafer got the final three outs for his fifth save.
Yaniel Cabezas extended his hit streak to five games with a 2-for-3 outing, the lone multi-hit game on the night for both teams. Everett starter Jordan Shipers was solid in the loss, going a season-high seven innings, allowing three runs on four hits, striking out six.
The rubber-game of the series is tomorrow night at 7:15 p.m., with Luis Liria meeting Bennett Whitmore.
NOTE - The 125 minute game was the fastest played by the Hawks this season...Zeller left the game in the seventh with an apparent shoulder injury...
