Omaha Lancers News Release
RALSTON, NE - In the first meeting between the two teams since October11th, the Omaha Lancers rode goals from seven different skaters to a 7-1 win over the Sioux Falls Stampede on Friday at Ralston Arena. With the win, the Lancers improved to 29-9-4 overall this season and with 62 points, remain alone in second place in the Western Conference and overall USHL standings, three points shy of the first-place Waterloo Black Hawks.
The Lancers came out on fire to start the game, but it was Sioux Falls that struck first as Louis Nanne tracked down an off-glass flick from Ed McGovern at 12:19 and poked it through the wickets on Omaha goaltender Hayden Hawkey for Nanne's first goal this season and a 1-0 Stampede lead. With time winding down in the opening frame, Tyler Vesel equalized for the Lancers at 19:14 on feeds from Tucker Poolman and Steven Johnson as the future Nebraska-Omaha Maverick took advantage of a net-mouth screen and buried his league-leading 30th goal of the season on the power-play to tie the game at one apiece.
In the second period, the Lancers lit their fuse early and exploded for six goals, tying the Des Moines Buccaneers for the most tallies in a single period in the USHL this year. Gage Hough started the scoring bonanza just 39 seconds into the period on feeds from Jake Randolph and Vesel, then, an unassisted Anthony Angello goal at 2:36 gave way to a Louie Rowe marker at 5:26, assisted by Austin Pooley and Angello.
Niklas Folin potted his first career USHL tally on the power-play at 8:26 thanks to assists from Jakob Forsbacka-Karlsson and Nash Worden and after the sixth Omaha goal came courtesy of Randolph at 9:59, with Luca Frigo and Johnson notching the helpers, the Lancers capped the scoring with a Brian Williams marker at 19:03 on a setup from Folin and Jake Henderson that made it 7-1 Omaha.
A scoreless third period saw Sioux Falls ratchet up the pressure, but Hayden Hawkey made 14 final-frame saves and 31 stops in sum total to improve to 14-2-0 overall this season in net for the Lancers. Omaha's third-ranked power-play entered Friday's game just one for their last 23, but a three-for-four showing with the extra skater helped Omaha break out of their man-up slump in a big way.
Next up for the Lancers, it's the final home game vs. the Lincoln Stars this season with the opening faceoff set for 7:35 pm on Saturday at Ralston Arena, presented by the Nebraska Lottery. Full coverage of Saturday's game begins at 7:20 pm with the "Valpak Pregame Show" on the Lancers' flagship station, "The Mighty" 1290 KOIL with Lancers broadcaster Tony Brown providing the play-by-play.
In 2013-14, the five-time Anderson Cup and seven-time Clark Cup Champion Omaha Lancers drop the puck on their 28th season in the USHL.
