Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Omaha, NE - The Ralston Arena curse lived on Friday night as the Stampede allowed six goals in the second period and fell 7-1 to the Omaha Lancers. The Stampede are 0-6-0 lifetime at Ralston Arena and dropped to 23-15-4 on the year and back into a third place tie with Sioux City. Louis Nanne tallied the only goal of the game for Sioux Falls who are 0-3-0 against Omaha this season and saw their two-game winning streak snapped in the loss.
The Stampede survived an early storm of shots from the Lancers in the opening moments and settled down and created several good scoring chances of their own. They broke through at the 12:19 mark on a goal from Louis Nanne, not only was it his first USHL career goal but also the first goal the Herd had scored on the Lancers this season. Ed McGovern chipped the puck off the glass from his own zone, perfectly placing a bouncing puck on the blue line where Nanne picked up the puck, raced inside the right circle and wristed a shot right through the five-hole of Omaha netminder Hayden Hawkey to give the Herd a 1-0 lead. It appeared the Herd would take that lead into the locker room, but the Lancers would score with just 46 seconds remaining in the period on a power play goal from Tyler Vesel who wristed a shot into the upper right hand corner of the net to tie the game 1-1 at the end of one period.
Things would get ugly for the Herd in the second as they allowed six goals by the Lancers. Gage Hough scored just 39 seconds into the period to give the Lancers a 2-1 advantage. Less than two minutes later it was Anthony Angello finding the back of the net when the split the Stampede defense and went top shelf past the glove side of Brey to give the Lancers a 3-1 lead. 1:50 later it was Louie Rowe scoring from the slot on a screen to make it a 4-1 game. That goal sent Brey to the bench as David Jacobson came into replace him.
The Herd were hoping that would reenergize the club, but the Stampede got into penalty trouble and the Lancers would take advantage. Niklas Folin scored on the first shot Jacobson saw and it beat him glove side to give Omaha a 5-1 advantage. Just over a minute later the Lancers went back on the power play and scored yet again on a blast from Jake Randolph that beat Jacobson and sent him back to the bench for Brey. The Lancers closed out the scoring by tallying their seventh goal with 57 seconds left when Ben Williams wrist shot went over the right pad of Brey and into the net. The Lancers ended the period scoring 6 goals on 13 shots.
Things settled down in the third as David Jacobson came in goal and stopped all five shots faced and the Herd racked up 14 shots as well as hit two crossbars and a goal post, but couldn't get the puck to bounce their way and fell 7-1. Sioux Falls outshot Omaha 32-30 on the night and went 0-for-3 on the power play while Omaha was 3-for-4.
The Herd will look to bounce back on Sunday as they travel to Waterloo to face the Black Hawks at 3:05 PM. Fans can hear the game live on KELO News Talk 1320-AM, 107.9-FM and online at www.kelo.com.
