Indiana Ice News Release
When facing an opponent for the seventh time in a season, you get to know one another's tendenancies.
Familiar foes Indiana Ice and the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders know each other all too well after Indiana staged a solid third-period comeback to take a 4-3 shootout win over host Cedar Rapids on Friday at "The Stable."
It was a pair of assists by Ryan Mantha that set up both scoring opportunities in the final 20 minutes as the newly acquired blueliner recorded a pair of helpers in the fray. Fellow newcomer Sam Kurker also picked up a pair of assists in the contest.
Patrick Newell, Aidan Muir and Scott Conway all provided the scoring touch for Indy while Jason Pawloski earned his 20th win in net with the 29-save effort.
Fighting back from a 3-1 deficit near the midway point of the third period, the Ice took advantage of RoughRiders' interference call to cut the margin to a single goal with just over six minutes left in the contest.
Mantha took the loose puck off a clearing Cedar Rapids clearing attempt and wristed it toward the net where Aidan Muir was stationed and waiting to pot his twelfth goal of the season.
Another net-bound shot from Mantha hit second-chance paydirt as team points-leader Scott Conway muscled in the game-tying goal with just 67 seconds left in the contest. The tally pushed his season mark to a team-leading 18 lamplighters in 36 contests.
Indy fans got all the excitement they needed in the overtime period as Cedar Rapids forward and Buffalo Sabres prospect Judd Peterson was awarded a penalty shot with 47 seconds remaining, but Ice goaltender Jason Pawloski was quick on the glove attempt to complete the rally and send the match into a shootout.
Snipers Denis Smirnov and Dwyer Tschantz beat RoughRiders netminder Chris Birdsall in the duel to capture the shootout win for visiting Indy.
Hockey returns to Bankers Life Fieldhouse on Saturday (2/8) as the Ice welcome the Youngstown Phantoms for "Scout Night" at 7:05 pm. The game is presented by Reis Nichols Jewelers.
