Wheeling Nailers News Release
The Nailers, needing a quick start against the Dayton Bombers tonight, scored the game's first goal and the game's last goal in overtime to secure a 3-2 win over the visiting Dayton Bombers tonight at WesBanco Arena.
Adam Edinger opened the scoring for the Nailers when he gathered a rebound and scored from a bad angle, putting the puck past Dayton goalie, Terry Denike. Jon Foster and Jon Smyth assisted on the play.
The Bombers tied the game at one at 12:53 of the first with a power-play goal. Corey LeClair scored his fourth goal of the year on a two-on-one down low. LeClair easily beat Andrew Penner off a cross-ice feed from Justin Maiser.
The Bombers added a second power-play goal with less than four minutes remaining in the opening period.
Penner appeared to have the puck covered up just in front of his crease, but the referees allowed play to continue. The puck squirted free from the mass of bodies and came right to Mike Berry who flipped it in over the prone goaltender.
The period ended with the Bombers leading 2-1.
Sean Collins tied the game for Wheeling at 3:15 of the second with his 18th goal of the season.
Collins skated down the right wing and threw a centering pass towards the net. The puck took a fortuitous bounce, deflecting off a Dayton defenseman's skate and past Denike. Ned Havern and Grant McNeill earned assists.
The game remained tied throughout the third period and the teams went to overtime.
Just 18 seconds into the overtime, Sean Collins took a pass from Paul Bissonnette and threw the puck at the net from the blue line. Ned Havern was stationed in front and deflected the shot past Denike for the game winning goal.
