Hat Trick lifts Mysticks

Mobile Mysticks News Release


The Mobile Mysticks downed the Columbus Cottonmouths 5-4 at the Columbus Civic Center and remain unbeaten this season against the Southeastern Division this season.

Blue Bennefield gave the Mysticks a 1-0 lead as he pushed a loose puck sitting on the goal line back in behind Alex Fomitchev just 4:11 into the contest. J.P. O'Connor set up the goal as his shot off a pass from Bennefield slithered by Fomichev and sat on the goal line.

The Cottonmouths answered on the power play as Justin Kearns fired a laser from the top of the left wing faceoff circle that beat Greg Hewitt at the 7:28 mark of the first period. Terry Marchant and Mike Omicioli added the assists on the play.

Brett Mills deflected Hugues Gervais' shot from the slot at the 3:04 mark of the first period to give the Mysticks a 2-1 lead. Gervais fired a one timer off a pass from John Sadowski to set up the power play goal. Columbus tied the game up at two just 3:19 into the second period as Darren McAusland beat Greg Hewitt on a two-on-one break. Mike Omicioli set up McAusland for the tally.

Mike Omicioli gave the Cottonmouths a 3-2 lead about five minutes later as he beat Hewitt on a centering pass from Terry Marchant. Justin Kearns also added an assist on the play.

Blue Bennefield tied the game up at three as he lifted a loose puck over the head of an outstretched Fomitchev. B.J. Kilbourne through the puck to the front of the net to set up Bennefield's tally at the 17:07 mark of the middle stanza.

Bennefield gave the Mysticks a lead they would never relinquish at the 4:54 mark of the third period as he pushed a puck past Fomitchev for a hat-trick. Tyler Deis and Benoit Cotnoir added the assists.

B.J. Kilbourne extended the Mysticks lead to 2 as he fired a shot from the left face-off cirlce past Fomitchev for his fifth power play goal of the season. Ryan Knox set up the goal at the 11:57 mark of the third as he stepped up to keep the puck in the zone and moved the puck to Kilbourne. The Cottonmouths could not tie the contest up, but Berry Dreger cut the Mysticks lead to one as he beat Hewitt at the 15:18 mark of the period. Tyler Palmer added an assist.

The Mysticks continue on their five game road trip as they travel to Jackson to battle the Bandits on Saturday and on to South Carolina next Tuesday and Greenville next Wednesday. The Mysticks return home to host the Macon Whoopee on March 22 at the Mobile Civic Center.
