Tony Iob Joins Squad; But Placed on IR

SAN DIEGO- The San Diego Gulls have signed veteran left-winger Tony Iob, the West Coast Hockey League club announced today.

The 5-foot-11-inch, 202-pound native of Renfrew, Ontario was placed immediately on the injured list due to back spasms. He's expected to be healthy in a couple of weeks.

Iob began his professional career in 1991 and spent most of his playing time in Europe. Iob did spend some time in the WCHL, playing for the Taylor Cup Champion Phoenix Mustangs in 1999-00. Iob led the league in playoff scoring that season.

"Tony is not just a goal scorer, but he's also a power forward," Gulls head coach and General Manager Steve Martinson said. "He's big and strong and plays very similar to Mark Woolf"

The Buffalo Sabres selected Iob in the ninth round of the 1991 NHL Entry Draft. Iob has averaged more than 1.25 points a game throughout his career.

The Gulls get set to open a two-game weekend series with the Colorado Gold Kings tonight at 7 p.m. Gulls coffee mugs, presented by the San Diego Hall of Champions, will be given to the first 5,000 fans. San Diego faces Colorado again Saturday at 7 p.m. St. Patrick's Day beanie Gulls, courtesy of San Diego Medicine, also will be distributed to the first 5,000 fans.
