Harvard Beckons Hawks' Horton
October 30, 2013 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa-Already the bearer of a reputation for academic excellence, Waterloo Black Hawks forward Jake Horton has selected Harvard University as the place where his studies and hockey career will take him next, the Black Hawks announced Wednesday.
Last spring, the Lake Elmo, Minnesota native was recognized as the co-winner of the United States Hockey League's Scholar-Athlete Award. He was also a valedictorian at Waterloo West High School. On the ice, Horton has appeared in 40 regular season games since debuting for the Black Hawks in November of 2011. In that time, he has notched 11 goals and 12 assists. In the early weeks of the current campaign, Horton is averaging better than a point per game, with two goals and six assists in seven contests.
"Jake's hard work in the classroom and on the ice has opened doors for him," said Black Hawks Head Coach P.K. O'Handley. "Hard work will carry him to more success as a hockey player, as a student, and long after he has moved on in his life from being either of those things."
There are now 13 Black Hawks who have formally announced their future college plans. Among that group, Horton's teammate Alec McCrea is also committed to skate for the Crimson. Tim Lappin will attend rival Ivy League institution Brown University.
Horton and McCrea will be reunited with former Black Hawks teammate Victor Newell at Harvard. Newell is a freshman at the school in Cambridge, Massachusetts, this fall.
