April 8, 2022 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Hartford Athletic News Release

HARTFORD, Conn. - Hartford Athletic will host MLS side New York Red Bulls in the third round of the US Open Cup at Trinity Health Stadium. The match will be played between April 19-21 with the official date and time yet to be confirmed. More information on ticketing will be available in the coming days with Season Ticket and Flex Plan holders receiving priority access.

This will be the club's first official match against an MLS opponent. Hartford has played preseason friendly matches with NYCFC and New England Revolution and frequently competes against New York Red Bulls II in USL Championship play.

Hartford advanced to the third round of the US Open Cup after a 3-1 victory over Oyster Bay United FC on Thursday night. Luka Prpa assisted on Joel Johnson's opening goal and added a goal of his own later in the match to earn Man of the Match honors. He is also nominated for US Open Cup "Player of the Round" for his performance.

Dating back to 1913, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the oldest cup competition in United States soccer and is among the oldest in the world. Open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the United States, the U.S. Open Cup is very similar to domestic cup competitions popular throughout Europe, South America and the rest of the world. Cup competitions, which usually run concurrent with a country's league season, are open in the early stages to any club that can qualify, giving local amateur teams a chance to compete against the best teams a country has to offer. The winner of each country's domestic cup competition, in addition to taking home the prize money, is automatically placed into a tournament to compete against neighboring countries' cup winners.
