Victoria HabourCats News Release
WALLA WALLA, WA - After losing two competitive games to begin the West Coast League season, the Victoria HarbourCats dug themselves a deep hole at Borleske Stadium on Sunday and could not climb out of it.
Right-hander Casey Costello (Orange Coast College) made the start for the HarbourCats who were looking to salvage the final game of the weekend series. The Sweets however, had other plans as they opened the scoring for the third consecutive day with a run in the first. They then broke it open with three in the second inning, coming on two hits and two HarbourCats errors to open up a 4-0 lead.
Walla Walla expanded the lead to 5-0 after a leadoff home run in the third. After a scoreless frame in the fourth, the Sweets added another in the fifth inning, Costello's final inning of work, going five innings allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
Right-hander Cody Ahlgrimm (Pacific Univ.) took over on the mound for the HarbourCats in the sixth, surrendering an unearned run after a leadoff walk came around to score on an error to make the score 7-0. Defense was a problem all game for the HarbourCats who committed four errors.
Right-handers Skyler Henderson (Vernon College) and Ethan Skuija (British Columbia) combined to pitch two scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth for the HarbourCats.
A succession of three Sweets pitchers shut out Victoria on just four base hits through eight innings before Victoria mounted a four-run ninth inning, highlight by a three-run double by Justin Bundy (Northeast Texas CC) scoring Brayden Resch (South Dakota St), Codi Guillory (Colby CC) and Jarron Silva (UCLA).
The HarbourCats (0-3) return to Victoria for Opening Night at Royal Athletic Park on Tuesday, a 7:05 first pitch against the Wenatchee AppleSox (0-3).
