Walla Walla Sweets News Release
WALLA WALLA, Wash- The Walla Walla Sweets (3-0) made history on Sunday afternoon in its 7-3 win over the Victoria HarbourCats (0-3). For the first time in club history, the team is 3-0.
It was another well-rounded game for the Sweets on the offensive and pitching sides. Walla Walla jumped out in front for the third straight night in the first inning on an RBI triple by Nick Nyquist (Gonzaga). It was his fourth RBI of the early season.
In the bottom of the second, already up 1-0, the Sweets tacked on three more runs on one RBI by Clayten Ayers (Georgia College and State) and two by Zach Weisz (Cal State Fullerton).
Up 4-0, the Sweets hit its first long ball of the season to lead off the third inning, and it came off the bat of Hayden Duer (Cal State Monterey Bay).
Walla Walla would add a run in the fifth on a passed ball and another in the sixth on a wild pitch to make it 7-0.
Victoria would break up the shutout in the ninth with four runs, including a three-run double by Justin Bundy (Northeast Texas CC). That ended a run of 14 consecutive innings that the Sweets' pitching staff held the HarbourCats scoreless.
Joe Heineman (Baylor) got the win in his Sweets debut, going 4 and third innings, giving up two hits and striking out five without yielding a run.
The Sweets have a day off tomorrow and will continue its home stand on Tuesday when the Kelowna Falcons come into Walla Walla.
