June 14, 2014 - West Coast League (WCL)
Victoria HabourCats News Release
Give the HarbourCats credit for being ready to strap on the spikes anytime and battle in a ball game.
Following a day-long trip from Victoria to read Bend, Oregon, the Victoria HarbourCats received stellar starting pitching from new right-hander Alex Garcia and emerged with a 3-0 victory over the hometown Elks on Friday night, in a game played in front of an announced crowd of 800.
Garcia, who arrived in Victoria this week, went seven innings with four punch-outs, four walks, and just two hits allowed. Carson Schneider and Alex Fagalde helped close out the shutout, marking the second dominant pitching night in a row for the HarbourCats. Mikey Wright and Preston Ryan combined on a 3-1 win over the Cowlitz Black Bears the night before at Sports Traders Diamond at Royal Athletic Park.
The HarbourCats scored two unearned runs thanks to just one hit in the third inning, as a Bend error set up the first runs with Ted Boeke and Kelly Norris-Jones came in to score. In the fifth inning, Nathan Lukes drove in the second run in that third inning, then drove in Norris-Jones again in the fifth inning for the game's final run. Norris-Jones singled to open the inning.
Bend ended up with six hits, while the HarbourCats made the most of just four base hits. The HarbourCats were not issued a single walk by Bend pitchers, although Boeke was hit by a pitch.
The HarbourCats will send RHP Alex Rogers to the mound on Saturday night in Bend, looking to improve on a 4-3 record that has the HarbourCats just one game out of first place in the West Division. The HarbourCats and Kitsap Blue Jackets are chasing the Bellingham Bells, with the Cowlitz Black Bears (3-3) in fourth spot.
The series concludes Sunday in Bend, and the HarbourCats will be back on home field on Monday to start a three-game series against the Bells ( www.harbourcats.com/tickets ), a series that includes Cowbells Night and Bobblehead Night.
