Hammerheads Add Two to Coaching Staff
March 26, 2015 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Wilmington Hammerheads FC News Release
Wilmington, NC - Wilmington Hammerheads FC officially announced today the hiring of Kenny Bundy and Mark Briggs as first team coaches for the club's 2015 USL season. Both will be involved in all aspects of player support and team preparations.
The primary roles of both coaches will consist of executing training on a daily basis, monitoring players, and supporting individual and team development on and off the field.
"Kenny [Bundy] and Mark [Briggs] are first and foremost great coaches," said Wilmington Hammerheads FC Technical Director and Head Coach Carson Porter. "Their insight, passion, drive and experience make them both excellent professionals. They have the respect of the locker room and we are delighted they are joining the first team staff. Beyond that, as leaders of our youth club they help build a bridge between our young players and our professionals as we continue to build our organization into what we believe can be one of the top non-MLS clubs in the country."
Along with assisting to the professional team, Kenny Bundy also serves as Executive Director of Wilmington Hammerheads Youth FC, the largest youth soccer club in the region.
"I am very excited about being a part of the first team," said Bundy. "This is a true community project - the relationship between the professional and youth programs. The quality of the staff and players is outstanding and I am happy to be a part of this organization in more ways than one."
Bundy previously donned a Hammerheads jersey on the pitch from 2004-2007 and in 2009. A former attacking player himself, he now works closely with the attacking players on the squad.
"Kenny's passion and knowledge is evident in any soccer conversation you have with him," said Porter. "He bleeds for this club, is a great teammate to all of us, and is very good at what he does."
Upon his coaching role, Mark Briggs also serves as Technical Director for Wilmington Hammerheads Youth FC.
"It is no surprise that I have a passion and a love for the team," said Briggs. "I am excited to be a part of the club and the direction the team is heading. I think it is good for the progression of the club to have members from the youth side assisting to the first team as it creates even more synergy and opportunities for the youth players to learn."
Not far removed from his playing days, Briggs has a knowledge of the league and has competed against many players that are still involved in it. A former Hammerheads player in 2009 and 2012, five current Hammerheads players have once called him a teammate on the pitch of Legion Stadium.
"Mark has a great way with the players and they trust him," said Porter. "He can still step on the field and play at a very high level, so to have a member of the coaching staff that our guys can speak 'player-to-player' with is invaluable."
The team kicks off their 2015 USL regular season at 7:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, March 28 versus the Richmond Kickers at Legion Stadium. Season ticket packages and single tickets are now available for purchase online.
