Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

Hall of Fame Weekend 2006 starts tomorrow! Vero Beach Dodger fans make sure you come early on Friday night as we induct the 2006 Hall of Fame Class in a pre-game ceremony at Holman Stadium. The ceremony starts at 6pm. Please join us as we honor Stu Pederson and Sid Fernandez as this year's Inductees. After the ceremony the Vero Beach Dodgers will take on the Lakeland Tigers at 6:30pm. The evening will end with a spectacular Fireworks Display following the game. The weekend of festivities continues on Saturday with the Inaugural Hall of Fame Golf Tournament at Pointe West at 10am. This tournament is open to the public as space permits. Call the Vero office at 772-569-4929 as soon as possible to reserve your spot. Current Dodger players and staff will be participating in the tournament.

In addition to the Hall of Fame festivities, this weekend marks the retirement of a Vero Beach Dodger institution - Betty Rollins. Please come early on Saturday night as we honor Betty prior to the game.

Stu Pederson was a member of the 1982 Vero Beach Dodger squad. He batted .336 and hit a franchise-record 18 triples. Pederson also set the team record for On-Base Percentage (.441), and hit in a record 21 consecutive games. In 11 professional baseball seasons, Pederson spent 8 at the AAA level or higher. He ended his career in Vero Beach with a bang as he hit a Grand Slam in his final at bat of the 1982 season. For his tremendous contributions to the team in 1982, he was named the Most Valuable Player for the Florida State League.

Sid Fernandez also played on the 1982 Vero Beach Dodger team. That season Fernandez was 8-1 with a 1.91 Earned Run Average. Despite a promotion to AAA in June of 1982, Sid led the Florida State League in strikeouts that year with 137. In his half-season in Vero, Fernandez hurled 2 no-hitters and set a Florida State League record with 21 strikeouts in one game. Sid Fernandez went on to play in the Major Leagues for 15 seasons, winning 114 games and averaging 8.4 strikeouts per 9 innings. In 1986 he won 16 games for the World Champion New York Mets.

Stu will be in Vero to accept the Hall of Fame honors. Unfortunately, Sid is unable to attend the ceremony.
