Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, FL (May 11, 2006) - The Fort Myers Miracle keep rolling out pitchers that do nothing, but throw quality outings. On Thursday night at Hammond Stadium it was Kyle Aselton's turn and he answered the bell as the Miracle defeated the Daytona Cubs for the second straight night 6-3.
Aselton, who had only worked past the fifth inning in two of his six prior starts, worked effectively on Thursday evening. After getting into a first and second nobody out jam in the first, he got a fielders choice and a double play to work out of the inning.
The next bit of trouble he ran into didn't come until the seventh. He gave up a lead off double to Matt Craig and with two outs walked Joe Simokaitis. Asleton had thrown 100 pitched as that point and was removed from the game. Reliever Ryan Callahan gave up an infield single to Ryan Harvey that scored Craig to make it 4-1 Miracle, but got Jemel Spearman to ground out to end the inning. Aselton went 6.2 innings allowing one run on five hits while walking three and striking out six to earn his third victory of the season.
The Miracle, who improved to 20-14, scored three runs in the third inning. Alexi Casilla singled to left, stole second, went to third on a ground out by Matt Tolbert and scored on Garrett Guzman's double. Brock Peterson then blasted a two run homer to left, his fourth of the season to make it 3-0.
The Miracle got a run in the fourth when Casilla singled to right, went to third on an errant pickoff attempt and scored on Guzman's sac fly.
With the score 4-1 in the eighth the Miracle got two much needed insurance runs. Peterson led off with a walk. With one out Trevor Plouffe walked. The runners advanced on a passed ball and Peterson scored on an RBI single by Kyle Geiger. Luke Hughes' groundball went through the legs of the shortstop Simokaitis that allowed Plouffe to score which made it 6-1.
The same two teams meet Friday night at 7:05 p.m. The Miracle send LHP Jose Mijares (0-1, 6.14) to the hill against Cubs RHP Matt Webber (0-3, 9.13). It is Happy Hour Friday presented by Budweiser Select, Shoeless Joe's Sports Café and WXKB 103.9. Hot dogs and chips and salsa are free from 6 -7 p.m., with $1 beer and sodas. It is also Teacher Appreciation Night/SCPE Reading is a Hit Night.
