Gylywoychuk Leads Wheat Kings To Win

Brandon, Manitoba -- With general manager and head coach Kelly McCrimmon attending the Western Hockey League's Governors Meetings, the Brandon Wheat Kings didn't miss a beat Tuesday night scoring a 5-0 victory over the visiting Red Deer Rebels at Westman Place.

The victory, Brandon's sixth in its last 7 games, made a winner of assistant coach Dwayne Gylywoychuk in his WHL debut. The club's all time leader in games played (323), Gylywoychuk ran the team from behind the bench on Tuesday night, with the help of fellow assistant Darren Ritchie.

Veteran Andrew Hayes turned aside 22 shots for the Wheat Kings, who remain six points back of first place Saskatoon in the WHL's Eastern Division. The Blades scored a 6-2 win over the Regina Pats on Tuesday.

Tuesday's shutout was Hayes' first of the year and fourth of his 2-year Western League career, moving him into a tie with Jomar Cruz and Joe Caligiuri for eighth place on the Wheat Kings' all time list.

Brandon opened the scoring with two unanswered first period goals and built up a commding 5-0 lead with three more in the second.

19-year old Matt Calvert led the winners with a goal and four points while Mark Stone and Brayden Schenn added a goal and two assists each. Nathan Green and Colby Robak added singles for the Wheat Kings, who were outshot 22-20.

The 35-15-3-1 Wheat Kings will now have a couple of days off to prepare for this weekend's games against Prince Albert and Edmonton at Westman Place. Friday's game will feature a salute to the Canadian Forces.
