Gwinnett Stripers News Release
The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves split a doubleheader against the Durham Bulls on Saturday night at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA. The G-Braves took the first game 4-1 but dropped a 6-2 decision to the Bulls in game two. The G-Braves (59-62) remain 15.5 games behind International League South leaders Durham in third place, and 9 games within Wild Card-leaders Louisville. Durham (73-45) leads the division by 14.5 games.
Game 1
It Was Over When: The G-Braves opened the game on an offensive outpouring for the second time in as many games into the homestand. Just like on Friday, Gwinnett once again touched Durham for 4 runs on 5 hits in the 1st inning and cruised to victory from there.
Braves Beat:
On the Mound: Starting LHP Scott Diamond went 4.2 IP and allowed just 1 R/ER on 4 hits. He also posted 4 K's in the outing, which means he's now allowed just 3 ER in his last 28.2 IP. RHP Michael Broadway (2-0) earned the win, though, putting in 1.1 IP of scoreless ball. RHP Stephen Marek closed the door for his 7th save.
At the plate: First baseman Freddie Freeman (2-for-3), DH Barbaro Canizares (1-for-2), right fielder Wilkin Ramirez (1-for-3) and second baseman Joe Thurston (0-for-2) notched their RBI on consecutive plays in the game-breaking 1st inning.
The opposition:
On the Mound: Durham LHP Brian Shouse (0-1) made his first Triple-A start of the season, earning the loss in 2.0 IP, while allowing 4 R/ER on 6 hits.
At the plate: Leadoff hitter and center fielder Desmond Jennings went 1-for-4 with an RBI and his 32nd stolen base to pace the Bulls.
Game 2
It Was Over When: The G-Braves couldn't continue their recent early offensive explosions from the previous two games, and Durham tacked on 2 early runs for a hole Gwinnett couldn't dig out of.
Braves Beat:
On the Mound: Starting RHP Tim Gustafson (7-6) went 5.0 IP and yielded just 2 R/ER despite 8 hits while striking out 5, but was the hard-luck loser in his first appearance back up at Gwinnett since June.
At the plate: Freeman stayed hot in this one, going 1-for-3 with a home run and RBI, but it was the only one for Gwinnett in a losing effort.
The opposition:
On the Mound: Durham starting LHP Jake McGee went 2.0 IP and struck out the first 4 batters he saw, but LHP R. J. Swindle (2-3) pitched 2.0 innings of relief for the win.
At the plate: Jennings once again led the way for his Bulls, going 3-for-5, and was one of 5 Durham players with 1 RBI.
On Deck: Gwinnett continues its five game homestand tomorrow with the series finale against Durham at 2:05 pm. The G-Braves will send LHP Jose Ortegano (3-8, 6.23 ERA) to the hill against RHP Brian Baker (7-3, 3.78 ERA). The game will be broadcast on the radio at WDUN-550 AM.
Etc: Legendary University of Georgia football coach Vince Dooley will be at the Team Store at Coolray Field signing his new book, Vince Dooley's Garden: A Horticultural Journey of a Football Coach from 1 p.m.-1:30 p.m. and again from 2 p.m.-3 p.m. Books will be for sale at the Team Store. Dooley will also throw out the game's first pitch.
