Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, FL (May 21, 2006) - Garrett Guzman is starting to become Mr. Clutch against the St. Lucie Mets. For the third time this season, he came up with a big base hit late in the ballgame against the Mets, this time a two run single in the seventh that propelled the Miracle to a 7-4 victory on Sunday afternoon at Hammond Stadium.
Guzman, who hit a three run homer in the eighth inning to tie the game at six on May 9 at Tradition Field and hit a two run homer on Saturday night in the seventh to give the Miracle a 5-3 lead, came up in a tight situation on Sunday. With the game tied at three and runners at second and third and one out in the seventh, Guzman ripped a single into center that scored both runs and gave the Miracle a 5-3 lead. Kyle Geiger followed that up with a single to right and Brock Peterson ripped a single to left that scored Guzman. The ball got under the glove of left fielder Alhaji Turay and it allowed Geiger to score all the way from first to make it 7-3.
The Miracle, who improved to 24-19, bullpen hung on from there. Danny Powers pitched a scoreless eighth inning after blanking the Mets in the sixth and Tim Lahey, gave up just one run in the ninth, but got a double play, with the tying run at the plate, to end the game.
Miracle starter Kevin Slowey, who led the league in ERA at 1.12, was solid, but gave up the most runs he had allowed in six starts. With the Miracle leading 1-0, Slowey gave up a one out single to Ambiorix Concepcion in the fourth. He went to second on a ground out and then battled Josh Petersen. He eventually got Petersen to hit a pop up to shallow left, but Trevor Plouffe misplayed the ball and it fell for a two base error which allowed Concepcion to score.
In the sixth the Mets scored a pair of runs when Jose Coronado led off with an infield single off of Slowey's glove. Concepcion then doubled him home and with two outs Jesus Flores doubled off the wall which scored Concepcion and gave the Mets a 3-1 lead. Slowey went 6.0 innings allowing three runs on seven hits while string out seven. He has now gone 33.1 innings without walking a hitter and has a 70/2 strike out to walk ratio.
The Miracle tied the score in the bottom of the sixth when Kyle Geiger reached on a throwing error by second baseman Jonathon Malo. Peterson followed with a single to right and with two outs Trevor Plouffe ripped a two run double down the left field line. Peterson finished the day 3-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
The same two teams meet Monday night in the finale of the four game series at 7:05 p.m. The Miracle send LHP Kyle Aselton (4-1, 2.68) to the hill against Mets RHP Salvador Aguilar (1-1, 3.38). It is Potts Sports Café Miracle Monday presented by WJPT 106.3/ It is also wacky canned food night.
