Dodgers Double Up Clearwater

May 21, 2006 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

(Vero Beach, FL) - Carlos Santana launched his first two home runs of the year as the Vero Beach Dodgers defeated the Clearwater Threshers 4-2 Sunday afternoon at Holman Stadium. Chris Westervelt and Adolfo Gonzalez also went deep. The Dodgers have won four of their last five games and will finish the series Monday night at 7:00 PM.

Vero Beach starter Scott Elbert (2-4) turned in perhaps his best outing of the year. He went a season-long 7 innings, allowing just three hits and two runs while striking out seven. Julio Pimentel, previously a starter, pitched the final two innings out of the bullpen for his first career save. He struck out three and did not allow a run.

All four Dodgers runs came on solo homers. Santana delivered the first with a line drive to left that led off the 5th inning. One out later Westervelt smacked his third home run of the season to make it 2-0.

Elbert had been masterful to that point, allowing just one single through his first five innings. In the sixth, however, Tuffy Gosewisch singled with one out and Brian Burgamy followed with his team-leading 6th home run to tie the score.

Vero regained the lead in the 7th. Santana delivered his second home run of the game to start the inning. It was a towering blast that easily cleared the Palm Trees is left. Clearwater lifted starter James Happ (2-5) soon after and Vero would not score again until the home run by Gonzalez in the 8th that made it 4-2.

Santana finished 3-4 and Gonzalez also enjoyed a multi-hit day. Those two hitters were a combined 5-23 entering Sunday's game. Westervelt's home run and a Travis Denker single were the only other hits by the Dodgers.
