Palm Beach Cardinals News Release

JUPITER, FL- Palm Beach closer Mike Sillman has been virtually perfect for the entire season, with his only run allowed coming from a solo homerun, unfortunately the second one came on Sunday afternoon, allowing the Lakeland Tigers to tie things in the ninth, before going onto a 2-1 victory in the tenth.

The loss drops Palm Beach (21-21) to .500 for the first time this season.

Sillman blew his first save opportunity of the season as clean-up hitter Jeff Larish sent a rocket over the right field wall with one away in the ninth. The run was the first surrendered by the closer here at the stadium. The Cardinals came into the contest with a 15-1 record when leading after seven innings.

Matt Scherer (4-3) picked up the loss, allowing an Andrew Graham single and then pinch-runner Jim Essian moved to third on a Scherer throwing error on a pick-off attempt. Gilberto Mejia singled up the middle for the go ahead RBI.

Blake Hawksworth pitched an incredible seven innings against the Tigers, allowing only five hits, no walks and striking out five. Hawksworth has been working quite well with catcher Brady Toops, as they extended their scoreless streak to 12 2/3 innings.

Lakeland (25-18) starter Kevin Ardoin, matched Hawksworth pitch-for-pitch, allowing one unearned run over seven innings and striking out six. The Tigers right-hander has put together a streak of his own, not allowing an earned run in 16 innings of work.

Palm Beach scored its only run in the bottom of the fifth, when Tyler Greene, who reached on a fielding error by third baseman Wilkin Ramirez, scored on a Juan Lucena single up the middle.

Kevin Whelan allowed only a walk, to pick up his ninth save of the year, and second of the series.
