Knoxville Smokies News Release
JACKSON, Mis. - The Mississippi Braves (13-16) fell behind Tennessee (14-12) by four runs early and never recovered in a 5-2 Smokies win, Saturday Night at Trustmark Park. The Smokies win draws them even with Huntsville for first in the Southern League North.
Marcus Mateo (1-0) started for the Smokies and was the winning pitcher for his efforts. Mateo pitched 5 2/3 innings in the outing and yielded eight hits with a walk but four strikeouts.
Brandon Guyer led off the game by lining a triple to the gap in right centerfield and scored when Darwin Barney legged out an infield single.
The Smokies added another three runs in the top of the third to go ahead 4-0. Barney doubled home Guyer to get it started. Then an RBI groundout scored Barney and Kyle Reynolds followed by doubling in Tony Thomas.
Mississippi countered in the bottom of the third to cut the lead in half. Pitcher Scott Diamond singled to center plating Eric Campbell. Diamond then scored on a groundout making the score 4-2.
The Smokies rallied again in the seventh to add a fifth run and take a 5-2.
Tennessee got excellent relief from the bullpen shutting out Mississippi from the sixth inning on. Jeremy Papelbon, Todd Blackford, Blake Parker and Brian Schlitter combined to fan five and yield just two hits. Schlitter finished the game and collected his third save.
