Mississippi Braves News Release

Pearl, MS - The first three batters in Tennessee's lineup (Brandon Guyer, Darwin Barner and Tony Thomas) went 8-14 with three RBI and five runs scored in the Braves 5-2 loss to the Smokies Saturday night. Even with the loss, the Braves won the series, three-games-to-two.

After the first two batters of the game, Tennessee was up 1-0. Brandon Guyer lined a triple to right-centerfield and Darwin Barney's single to deep second base brought him home. It marked the ninth time in the last 14 games the M-Braves were down after the first inning.

The Smokies blew the game open with a three-spot in the third. Two singles and two doubles gave Tennessee a 4-0 advantage. Guyer, Barney and Tony Thomas each collected a hit and scored a run in the inning.

Mississippi answered with a pair of runs in the home-half of the third. Eric Campbell led off with a double and Scott Diamond helped his own cause by singling Campbell home. With the bases loaded, Travis Jones grounded into a double play that allowed Diamond to score from third with the Braves second run. After three, the Braves trailed 4-2.

Guyer singled and scored again in the seventh. After Barney singled to move him into scoring position, Guyer moved to third and scored when Thomas reached on a sac-bunt-error. Thomas' attempt to move the runners up a bag was fielded by pitcher Steve Marek. Marek wheeled and threw to third, but threw wide of the bag allowing Guyer to score easily. The Smokies lead was three heading to the bottom of the seventh.

Scott Diamond (1-3) gave up five runs, four earned, in his six innings on the hill and suffered the loss. Steve Marek wasn't charged a run in his inning of work and Brian Dumesnil threw two scoreless innings.

Marcos Mateo (1-0) gave up two runs on eight hits through 5.2 innings. He held the Braves in check to get the win. Jonathan Papelbon got one out in the sixth inning. Todd Blackford threw one scoreless inning and Blake Parker did the same. Brian Schlitter came on in the ninth and recorded his third save with a scoreless inning.

After a day off for Mother's Day on Sunday, the Braves head to Jacksonville, FL to take on the Jacksonville Suns, the AA affiliate of the Florida Marlins, in the first game of a five-game series and a 10-game roadtrip. In game one Monday, Mississippi's Kyle Cofield (1-1, 3.96) will take on a Major League rehab in the form of Jacksonville's Andrew Miller.
