Sporting Kansas City News Release
KANSAS CITY, MO (April 8, 2003) - Join Kansas City Wizards midfielder Diego Gutierrez and the American Lung Association for the Kick Butts 5K, which brings the Kansas City community together to celebrate smoke-free youth and all who have kicked the habit. This important event supports those who are trying to quit smoking and remembers those who have lost their lives to tobacco-related illnesses. Gutierrez, spokesperson for the Kicks Butts 5K, will continue to work with the American Lung Association throughout the year teaming with ALA representatives inside area schools to promote tobacco-free lifestyles.
"Working with the American Lung Association is very important to me. I have an opportunity to touch lives and talk about the important message of staying tobacco free. I feel that it is a cause that saves lives and that it definitely alters young lives for the better," said Gutierrez. "Going into schools and creating awareness of tobacco use is something I feel very strong about and hopefully I will be able to get out to the community as much as I can to support the cause."
Gutierrez will begin his school campaign this month talking with students about making the right choices and saying "NO" to tobacco use. The Kick Butts 5K Run will kick off his partnership and help grow the awareness. On Sunday, Gutierrez will team up with Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Scott Fujita to start the runners. Fujita has a similar interest in the American Lung Association and helping youth move in a positive direction.
"I am very excited to join Diego in starting the Kick Butts 5K. Having a history of lung disease in my own family, I know first-hand how important it is to support the American Lung Association because they touch so many people's lives," says Fujita. "In honoring those who have conquered lung disease and helping fund tobacco awareness campaigns for youth, we are all on a very important winning team."
Registration for the race begins on Sunday, April 13th, at 6:30 a.m. Runners entry fee includes a T-shirt and a ticket to a future Wizards game.
Gutierrez and Fujita will begin the race at 8:00 a.m. For more information please call the American Lung Association at 816-842-5242 or visit www.active.com.
