November 4, 2018 - American Hockey League (AHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release
The San Diego Gulls opened a two-game road trip with a 4-2 setback to the Ontario Reign at Citizens Business Bank Arena. The regulation loss ended San Diego's five-game point streak from Oct. 13-27 (3-0-1-1).
Josh Mahura opened the scoring with his first AHL goal at 16:54 of the first period. The power-play goal marked his fifth point this season (1-4=5).
Kalle Kossila collected an assist on Mahura's goal to extend his point streak to three games (3-1=4). Logan Shaw tallied the secondary assist, his fifth point of the season (2-3=5).
Max Jones scored his first regular-season AHL goal with 2:54 remaining in regulation. A first-round selection (24th overall), by the Anaheim Ducks in 2016, Jones scored his first AHL goal on May 10, 2017 vs. San Jose in Game 3 of the Pacific Division Finals.
Troy Terry collected the primary assist on Jones' goal to extend his point and assist streak to five games (3-5=8). The five-game point streak ties a Gulls rookie record for consecutive games with a point to begin an AHL career, matching Giovanni Fiore's five consecutive games with a point to begin his AHL career from Oct. 13-25, 2017 (2-3=5). Terry's five-game assist streak is a club rookie record for assists to begin a Gulls career. Jake Dotchin also earned an assist on the goal, his first point of the season and first as a Gull.
Sam Steel made his AHL debut after collecting 1-2=3 points 12 games with the Anaheim Ducks to begin the 2018-19 season prior to his assignment to San Diego on Oct. 31. Steel was selected by Anaheim in the first round (30th overall) of the 2016 NHL Draft.
Kevin Boyle made 23 saves in his fourth appearance of the season.
The Gulls will conclude the two-game road trip on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at the Tucson Roadrunners at Tucson Convention Center Arena (6:05 p.m., Radio: ESPN 1700, Stream: AHLTV).
POSTGAME QUOTES
San Diego Gulls
Max Jones
On his performance
I felt like I played really well that whole game, but I coughed that one up on the wall. That's another game right there. The whole game it goes well and then one costly turnover in the back of our net. It's my fault and I know that. I expect better out of myself, my teammates do, and I take full responsibility for that. I did whatever I could to get back on the board and I scored, but it's going to haunt me for a while. I felt like I played really well, but it's the little things like that, that can turn it all the way around.
On physicality of his game
I felt really good that shift, that's usually what I'm like. Again, it's my fifth game here back from injury and I'm just pushing back into my style. I'm getting my hands, my mindset, everything underneath me. It's coming back slowly, but that game felt really well.
Head Coach Dallas Eakins
On the strong start
I thought we were going and I thought our execution was there. A lot of things that we had worked on in practice was very encouraging. We got ourselves into some penalty trouble that we tried to address between periods. It's going to be something with this group that we have to keep on. We can't keep taking these stick penalties far away from out net.
On Ontario's two quick goals
I thought we survived the second (period). We were still skating but our execution went from excellent in the first period to absolutely crap in the second. Those are hard to put together when you're a coach. 'How can you be so good in one area and then suddenly it goes the other way?' We talked about that after the period and during the second period and then we came out in the third and were going again. We've got to put together a full, 60-minute game. I'm encouraged that we didn't give up a whole bunch of shots or a whole bunch of chances. I thought our power play was ok, I thought our penalty kill was excellent. We just can't give up those two chances that they got on those goals there. We've got to clog those up somehow
On the Max Jones-Sam Steel-Troy Terry line
I thought they were good. I thought that was Jonesy's (Max Jones) best game. It's really encouraging, he's coming along and he's getting comfortable now. He's understanding what he needs to do as a winger at the pro level. Sam (Steel) is just getting his feet wet today in this league and I thought he did some great things. Terry again was making plays happen. Took a hit to make a play on Jones' goal. Usually when you have three players like that together with that amount of experience, you're sometimes holding your breath. Not at all tonight. We had full confidence in them. We had them out there late with the goalie out. Overall a really good game by those three.
