CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Monsters, American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets, were defeated by the Grand Rapids Griffins on Sunday night at The Q by a final score of 8-4. With the loss, the Monsters dropped to 7-4-1-0 overall this season and with a .625 points percentage, remain alone in second place in the AHL's North Division standings.
It was the Monsters who struck first in the opening frame as Alex Broadhurst poked home a loose puck in front of the net on the power-play at 2:36 of the period thanks to assists from Zac Dalpe and Nathan Gerbe to give Cleveland an early 1-0 advantage. The Griffins got on the board shortly after at 6:20 when Dominik Shine scored on feeds from Givani Smith and Filip Hronek to even the score, 1-1. Dalpe pushed Cleveland back in front at 14:27 on assists from Monsters blue-liner Tommy Cross and Eric Robinson to give the home team a 2-1 lead heading into the break.
Grand Rapids opened the scoring in the middle frame thanks to an even-strength tally at 4:48 of the period by former Monsters forward Carter Camper on feeds from Chris Terry and Turner Elson, tying things up once again, 2-2. The Monsters jumped back in front later in the period thanks to Mark Letestu's power-play goal at 16:42 courtesy of Gerbe and Dalpe, giving Cleveland a 3-2 lead heading into the second intermission.
Dalpe got the scoring started for Cleveland in the final period, scoring on the power-play at :28 on set-ups from Broadhurst and Ryan MacInnis to extend the Monsters lead to 4-2. The Griffins closed the scoring for the evening with six straight goals from Terry, Filip Zadina, Axel Holmstrom, Matthew Ford, Shine, and Zadina again to secure an 8-4 Grand Rapids victory.
Cleveland goaltender Jean-Francois Berube stopped 27 of 33 shots faced to fall to 3-4-1 on the season, while Griffins backstop Harri Sateri stopped 32 of the 36 pucks he faced, improving to 4-4-0 on the year.
