San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO –– The San Diego Gulls broke out of their five-game funk with a 2-1 win over the front-running Idaho Steelheads Friday night, before 5,501 at the San Diego Sports Arena. San Diego out-shot Idaho 42 to 22 and move to within six points of first place in the West Coast Hockey League.

The Gulls (4-4-1) came flying out of the gate and took a 1-0 lead midway through the opening period. Joe Bianchi, making his season debut, stole the puck along the boards and shoveled it to Sandro Sbrocca, who beat a stretched out Jason Cugnet for his first goal of the year. The second assist was given to Jamie Black. San Diego out-shot Idaho (7-2-1) 16-4 in the first and had opportunities to extend its lead if not for the acrobatic saves by Cugnet.

San Diego continued to pepper Cugnet in the second period and grabbed a two-goal cushion thanks to Mark Pederson's team-leading sixth goal. Pederson stole an errant clearing pass, hesitated for a few moments and blasted a slap shot in the top left corner. The Blue and Orange carried the 2-0 lead and a 22 shot advantage heading into the third period.

Idaho got an early goal in the third to cut the lead in half. The puck was loose to the side of Gulls netminder Trevor Koenig and reigning WCHL Player of the Week Cory Morgan crept in and banged home his fifth goal. Chris Marinuci and Michal Pinc got the helpers. That would end the Steelhead attack, however, as the Gulls made the one-goal lead stand up.

Notes: San Diego is now 25-16-3 all-time against the Steelheads during the regular season and 16-4-2 at home... The Gulls have now won 39 straight games when leading after two periods... The Blue and Orange are still struggling with the man advantage however, going 3 for its last 48... Idaho's five-game win streak was snapped tonight... Bianchi, who sat out the first eight games with a concussion, made his season debut tonight... Clint Cabana remains on injured reserve... Marc Busenburg and Rob Voltera remain with the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears

San Diego hits the road again and plays the Bakersfield Condors Saturday night. Game time at Centennial Garden is set for 7 p.m. The Gulls then have a week off before hosting Idaho again on Saturday. All games can be heard live on 1130AM-KSDO and at www.ksdo.com with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play.
