Kelowna Rockets News Release
Kelowna, B.C. -- With the Kelowna Rockets' 1-0 shutout victory over the visiting Spokane Chiefs last night, goalkeeper Kelly Guard set a Canadian Hockey League and Western Hockey League record for most shutouts in a single season with eleven.
That breaks a 36-year old record. The previous record of 11 was set by former Flin Flon Bomber netminder Chris Worthy during the 1967-68 campaign. Worthy later graduated to the professional ranks, playing for the Edmonton Oilers of the World Hockey Association. Guard, a 20-year old goaltender from Prince Albert has recorded 34 wins, 9 losses and four ties in 47 games this season. His goals against average is 1.56 while his save percentage of .926 and 33 victories remain tops in the WHL.
"We are very thrilled for Kelly," says Rockets' President and general manager Bruce Hamilton. "Our organization is proud of him as well as the fact both Kelly Guard and the Rockets become a part of the record books."
The Rockets travel to Prince George to meet the Cougars on Friday night.
