The Gateway Grizzlies used a five-run fifth inning to go ahead for good, as they defeated the Washington WildThings 10-9 Tuesday night at GMC Stadium.
The Grizzlies are now 9-16. Washington is 14-11.
The Grizzlies trailed 5-0 and 8-2 in the game. They scored eight unanswered runs to take a 10-8 lead. Washington added a run in the seventh, before Grizzlies pitchers retired the final nine hitters to preserve the win.
Bradon Averill and Oscar Vargas each had three RBIs for the night. Averill was 2-4, including a two-run home run. Vargas was 1-4 with a three-run double in the fifth inning. Jimmy Reiter and Shawn Smarsh added two RBIs apiece. Reiter was 3-5. Smarsh was 1-3.
Nick Szczur went 4 2/3 innings in relief for the win. Szczur (1-0) allowed four runs and struck out three. Eric Ebers pitched 1/3 of an inning. Ryan Hamilton pitched a perfect ninth for his second save of the year.
The Grizzlies and the WildThings continue the series with a 7:05 game Wednesday night at GMC Stadium.
