Missed Opportunities
June 21, 2005 - Frontier League (FL)
Mid-Missouri Mavericks News Release
The Mid-Missouri Mavericks squandered another opportunity to climb out of the cellar. The Mavericks dropped the finale of a six-game homestand to Chillicothe 10-5 Sunday at Taylor Stadium. The loss keeps Mid-Missouri (7-16) one-half game behind fourth-place Windy City and Gateway in the Frontier League's West Division. The Paints (13-11) won their second in a row, and finish their six-game road swing through Missouri with a .500 record.
The loss on Sunday was the fourth straight missed opportunity by Mid-MO to get out of sixth place in the Frontier League's West Division - someplace the Mavs' haven't been out of since the beginning of the 2004 season.
Wednesday the 15th, Thursday the 16th, Saturday the 18th, and Sunday the 19th...four days that saw the Gateway Grizzlies lose to their opponent. But also four days that went by without a victory from the Mavericks. Mid-MO now sits at 7-16, just ½ game behind both the Grizzlies and the Windy City Thunderbolts (both are at 8-16). Can the Mavs move out of the basement during their six-game road trip? Stay tuned to www.midmomavs.com to find out!
Some bright spots for the Mavericks during their most recent home stand...recently acquired speedy outfielder Josh Wettlaufer was 2 for 5 in his Mavericks' debut, driving in two runs and stealing a base. And Mavericks' stand-outs Brent Metheny and Greg Buscher both extended their hitting streaks to eight games.
Also, hurlers Steve Soja and Nick Renault both pitched complete games during the Mavs' recent homestand. Renault's gem came during Mid-MO's romp over Chillicothe - an 18-1 victory on the 17th. Renault struck out a Mavs' season high 13 in the win. Soja's effort was unfortunately wasted in a 5-3 loss to the Paints on the 18th. Steve went the distance, striking out six and only allowing a single earned run (lowering his ERA to a miniscule 1.85, good enough for 5th best in the Frontier League).
Double Dustys for the Mavericks
Dusty Young did more than solidify the Mavericks' middle infield when he joined the team as its shortstop Tuesday (the 14th). He made it possible for Mid-Missouri to boast one of the more inane distinctions in the Frontier League. No other team has a double-play combination whose components share the same first name.
