ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Evansville Otters won their first meeting with the Rockford RiverHawks since last year's Frontier League finals at the same place the RiverHawks won the 2004 pennant.
Four Otters combined on a five-hitter as Evansville beat Rockford, 6-3, in front of 1,559 at Marinelli Field.
Brian McKenna hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning and Cole Hilt doubled in two more in the fifth as the Otters built an early 4-0 lead off Rockford starter Derek Roper (3-1).
Evansville starter Ben Foster (3-1) scattered a run on four hits in 6 1/3 innings for the win. Rockford didn't get on the board until the sixth inning and rallied for two more in the ninth on Gooby Gerlits' two-out single to left field.
Game two of the three-game series is at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday. The first 1,000 through the gate get RiverHawks wallets, courtesy of Union Savings Bank.
The RiverHawks are the defending champions of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 13th season. All games are broadcasted live on WRHL-FM, 102.3 - the Hub.
