Grizzlies win slugfest

The Gateway Grizzlies and the Rockford RiverHawks banged out 24 hits, hit five home runs and scored 15 runs in a game won by the Grizzlies 9-6 Friday night in front of 4,154 fans at GMC Stadium. The win evens the Grizzlies with the RiverHawks. Both teams are in second place in the West Division with identical 16-12 records.

Daylon Monette hit a grand slam in the bottom of the first inning to make it 4-0, and the Grizzlies never trailed. Wayne Astrauskas added his first home run of the season to make it 5-0 in the bottom of the second.

Monette was 1-4 with the four RBIs. Todd Oetting was 2-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Mike Breyman was 2-4 with an RBI. Gary Gilbert was 1-4 with an RBI. Greg Stevens and Jimmy Reiter had two hits a piece.

Brandon Smith went five innings allowing three runs on six hits. He struck out four on the night. He earned the win to improve to 2-1. Mike Golden went a perfect 1 1/3 innings, striking out two for his seventh save of the year.

The Grizzlies and RiverHawks continue the series with a 7:05 game Saturday night at GMC Stadium.
