Grizzlies Run Win Streak To Four With Second Straight Shutout

CRESTWOOD, Ill.- Tyler Heil's ninth inning single lifted the Gateway Grizzlies to their fourth consecutive win Friday night, as they defeated the Windy City Thunderbolts 1-0 at Standard Bank Stadium. The four-game winning streak is the longest for the Grizzlies since the 2008 season.
Heil's single plated Matty Johnson with the eventual game-winner. Johnson walked to lead off the inning, then advanced to third when Windy City catcher Dan Jordan attempted a pickoff throw to first, and threw wide of the bag. Heil lined the single off the glove of shortstop Guillermo Martinez, who was playing in as part of a drawn-in infield. The hit was Heil's only one of the night. He finished 1 for 5.
Friday was the second consecutive shutout for the Grizzlies, and the pitching staff hasn't allowed an earned run in 28 consecutive innings. Eric Gilliland (3-1) earned the win in relief. Gilliland came on with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning. After inducing the fielder's choice to end the eighth, he worked a perfect ninth, striking out two to secure the win. Nick Walters and Sean Toler each also appeared in the eighth inning. Walters gave up a hit and walked a batter but struck out two. Toler also walked a hitter. All three pitchers followed David Goodenough to the hill. Goodenough worked the first seven scoreless innings, allowing six hits. He struck out two. It was the longest of his four professional starts.
The Grizzlies (25-22) had just six hits, total. No player had more than a single hit Friday night. The Grizzlies remain one-half game behind River City for second place in the West Division.
The loss was the third consecutive for Windy City (22-23).
The Grizzlies and Windy City will continue the series Saturday night in Crestwood. First pitch is set for 7:05 pm.
