Grizzlies rally to beat Roosters

Richmond, Indiana - Richmond lost 6-4 on Saturday in the first game of a series against Gateway. The Roosters scored early and took the lead, but went scoreless over the last six innings and lost on a late inning rally by the Grizzlies. Richmond has now lost five of its last six games.

The Grizzlies scored first with two runs in their first at-bat. Shawn Smarsh and Ben Margalski each had RBI hits to give Gateway an early 2-0 lead. Richmond scored two runs in the bottom of the second to even the score. Rich Daly and O.J. Garza scored on a RBI by Joe Rhomberg and Mike Reese. Gateway scored a run in the third, but the Roosters plated two more in their half of the inning to take a 4-3 lead.

Richmond remained one run ahead for four innings until Gateway came to bat in the eighth. Three Grizzlies scored in the inning off two hits, two walks and an error. Ryan Sullivan had an RBI sacrifice fly and Jimmy Reiter had a two RBI single to center to give Gateway a 6-4 lead. Erik Dessau (2-1) got the win for the Grizzlies while Jesen Merle (2-1) got the loss. Matt Powell (2) earned the save.

The Roosters (18-25) have two games remaining against Gateway (18-25). Sunday's game will begin at 4:35 p.m. (Indiana time). Robby Read (1-2, 4.70 ERA) will get the start for Richmond and face Brandon Smith (5-3, 3.38 ERA). Sunday is Palladium-Item Family Day at McBride Stadium.
