
Grizzlies outslug Freedom on opening day

The Gateway Grizzlies offense came to life Wednesday night just in time for the home opener. The Grizzlies (3-4) scored 17 runs on 18 hits while routing the Freedom (3-4) in front of a home-opener crowd of 4,337 at GCS Ballpark.
The Grizzlies scored three runs in the first inning and never trailed. They would added a single run in the second, five more in the third, three in the sixth, four in the seventh and one more in the eighth.
Multiple players had good nights at the plate for the Grizzlies.
Jason Arrowood led the way, going 4-6 with a pair of run scored. Brooks Colvin went 3-5 with three RBIs. Taylor Johnson 3-6 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Kevin House was 2-4 with an RBI and three runs. Freddy Lopez was 1-3 with two RBIs.
E.J. Basta earned the win in relief for the Grizzlies. Basta (1-0) went two innings allowing three runs on three hits. He struck out two and walked two. Steve Soja started and went the first 4 2/3 innings. He allowed five runs on 10 hits.
Joey Watts started and took the loss for Florence.
The Grizzlies and Freedom continue the series with a 7:05 game Thursday night at GCS Ballpark. Tickets remain and can be purchased by calling the Grizzlies at 618-337-3000.
