Rascals Squander Five Run Lead in 7-6 Loss to Kalamazoo

River City Rascals News Release

KALAMAZOO, MI - The River City Rascals had all the opportunities in the world to win their first game on the road this season, but a lack of clutch hitting and an untimely home run sent the Rascals to their third loss in four games. Kalamazoo 1B Ray Gill had three hits including the game-winning homer in the bottom of the 8th inning to give the Kings a come from behind victory and their first win against a West Division opponent.

The Rascals took advantage of some early Kalamazoo wildness when they scored five times against Kings' starter Josh Harris in the top of the third inning. River City got RBI hits from Eddie Kim and Eric Chevalier but was also helped out by three walks, two hit batsmen, a wild pitch, and an error by SS Casey William Baker to turn a 1-1 tie into a 6-1 Rascals lead. The Kings used six pitchers in the game and three of them were used in the River City third inning.

The Kings would answer back however, by scoring two runs each in the fourth and sixth innings to pull to within 6-5. Gill, who finished with 5 RBI to tie him with Rascals 1B Geoff Desmond with 11 on the season, had an RBI double in the fourth and added an RBI single that scored Casey Curtis Baker with Kalamazoo's fifth run.

River City had numerous chances to put the game away late but stranded five runners in scoring position in the final five innings of the ballgame. The team left the bases loaded in both the third and the seventh stanzas and went on to leave 14 men on the base paths, one shy of their season-high.

In the eighth, Kevin Cassidy (0-1) walked the lead-off hitter Pete Pirman. It was the only base on balls charged to the Rascals pitching staff in the game. It proved to be costly as the very next batter, Gill, would hit his second home run of the season that plated the winning run. Brad Blackwell struck out the side in the ninth to pick up his third save of the season.

The Rascals return home for a weekend series with the Florence Freedom on Saturday, June 3rd for Edward Jones Hat Night. The first 1,000 fans entering T.R. Hughes Ballpark will receive a baseball cap with the new Rascals colors courtesy of Edward Jones. Gates will open at 6:00pm and parking at T.R. Hughes Ballpark is always free.
