Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Chris Begg earned his 12th win of the season while Justin Leone and Luis Figueroa had three hits apiece to lead the Fresno Grizzlies past the Portland Beavers 7-6 in front of 8,153 Sunday afternoon at PGE Park.

Fresno holds a 3-0 lead in the season-ending series for both teams.

Paul McAnulty had three hits to lead the Beavers (57-86), who closed a one-time six-run gap to a single run thanks to a three-run rally in the eighth.

Begg (12-5) gave up three runs (2 earned) and seven hits over six innings. The right-hander struck out four and issued two walks for the Grizzlies (77-66), who have won five of their last six games.

Leone and Tomas De La Rosa both hit RBI doubles as the Grizzlies broke out for three runs in the first inning.

The Beavers responded in the first, getting a run back on Ray Chang's RBI single to left that scored McAnulty with two outs.

Will Thompson added a bases-loaded, two-run single in the third, and Fresno built its lead to 7-1 with a two-run, fourth-inning double from Figueroa.

Royce Huffman scored on a force out and a subsequent throwing error in the sixth, and later in the inning, pinch-hitter Cedric Hunter drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs to make it 7-3.

With two men on in the eighth, Yordany Ramirez lined a ball to right and came all the way around to score on a play that was ruled a single and a three-base error by outfielder Brian Horwitz, bringing the Beavers to within a run at 7-6.

The Beavers put the tying runner on third base with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Erick Threets coaxed a game-inning grounder to short from Luke Carlin.

In his third start with the Beavers, left-hander Casey Fossum surrendered seven runs, eight hits and five walks in four innings to fall to 0-2 with the club.

The Beavers conclude the 2007 season Monday at PGE Park against the Grizzlies. First pitch is 2:05 p.m.
